In fact, air stones will do very little to help the gas exchange. Large bubbles do more in that large bubbles disturb the water surface more and turbulence at the surface is
the major way to provide proper gas exchange.
However, as mentioned, if the house is shut up and doesn't get enough fresh air introduced, then less exchange can occur in the tank.
Introducing fresh air to the area over the water surface will work but it still needs a fair bit of air to do the job, and, the air quality is almost instantly contaminated with the existing house air.
Simply opening windows/doors works also, but you lose the energy that has cooled or heated the indoor air prior to opening.
In my case, I installed an HRV which provides fresh incoming air to the household, and recovers the heat/cold (winter/summer) of the outgoing air to the incoming air.
