Default Iodine Dosing

Hi All,
Was just reading a thread on another site and being dicussed is Iodine Dosing. It appears some people do it and others are against it. The against say it is not necessary and also dangerous because it can't be measured.
I'd been interested in what you all think. Personally I dose it once a week.

I have an "all in one" supplement that I dose once a week that has iodine in it. Never had any major problems that can be linked back to it (that I know of). Not sure about the pure iodine supplements though. I wouldn't, only because again I use the "all in one."

I used to use it lightly.
I'd notice my softies would perk up.
Umm... that didn't sound good.

Anyway, I also noticed that if I overdid it, my shrimp would molt.
Ok, that didn't sound good either.
I'm out.

I use Seachem's Iodide. Seachem claims iodine is toxic, and iodide is safe. I once read on the difference between iodide and iodine, and it made me even more confused. Maybe someone can clarify. Anyways, I do use Seachem's Iodide to keep iodide levels at .06 mg/L, but I do not notice any type of reaction from my livestock...

Also, you can measure Iodine with Seachem's Iodine / Iodide Test Kit..

Anyone keep xenias? Dont they flourish in water with high iodine??? My LFS told me I had to supplement with Iodine to keep xenias. My Purple Up has Iodine, so I just use that.

Anyone with any experience?

If your putting iodine in your tank you had better be testing for it. Scares me to see how many people just add things to their tank and have no clue if the need it or not. Very dangerious practice.

Idonine can be highly toxic to your livestock if used at high doses. If you are supplementing with any other product be sure to read the label as iodine may also be included in that product. As already stated, if using any supplements be sure you are testing for that particular element.

Newsalt,
Yep, keeping Xenias and they are growing like wildfire in our 72. They are absolutely beautiful and one of my favorites. You are correct, Purple up does contain iodine so, really, there is no further need for supplementation.

This picture was taking on Sept 25, and they have grown since then.

I don't add iodine to my system either. Don't add if you're not testing.
