Do you mean under the tank?

Some put some spongy material or styrofoam under acrylic tanks to evenly distribute the weight of the tank's contents; but it's not necessary for glass.

I'm not sure what your construction is . . .

Do tell, LG.

on a 30 gallon I wouldn't worry about it, if its glass...I have nothing under my 46 gallon bow front, and I have 40 pounds of sand and 50-55 pounds of LR, plus whatever rocks I get corals on now, the sand keeps the rock from putting all its force in one spot if they are not totally through the sand...people do use egg crate on the top of open tanks to keep fish from carpet surfing.

_________

...AGA 46 gal. bowfront, coralife 192watt aqualight, koralia 4, aqua c remora w/maxijet 1200 and surface skim box,200watt heater, 40 pounds black aragonite reef sand, 50 lbs. LR...cycling at the moment...
...12 gal. Nano-Cube, heavily modded, becoming a QT/Hospital tank for the new 46

LG, people use eggcrate near the bottom of thier tank as a plenum if doing the Jaubert method. Maybe, that's what got you thinking of eggcrate on the bottom. Otherwise, it's as above, eggcrate on top to foil jumpers and foam or some other padding undreneath the tank to absorb and slight irregularities in the stand so that they don't put stress on the glass (or acrylic).

2 40 gal tanks side by side on a 6 foot stand. CF bulbs Magnum 350 canister filters and 9 Turtles

if you dont have sand in the tank, i know alot of people that use starboard(?) to kind of even things out on the weight distribution, dont know much about it but hear it all the time in bigger tanks, i think it also helps to not scratch the glass.
