| ive handled my green paly,(button polyps) without goloves once with my hand in a cup shape over the top of the polyps, well they must have been rubbing against my palms cause, i started playing some xbox360 and noticed my hand started getting tingly radiatiing from the palm out. then for about 2-3 hours my whole palm was numb and the veins seemed swolen and sore.
i have not touched them since, (i now wear latex gloves no powder) |

| No problem with jokes in a humor thread -- the point of this one is to provide information about serious dangers. Not to minimize them.
And no, WE don't ALL understand the seriousness of it -- this thread is hit by people of all ages and experience levels. From all over the internet looking for information using a Google search -- I found it that way.
Many teenagers keep fish and have no idea that there is any need whatsoever for protective gloves or hand washing, for instance, in cleaning even a guppy tank. Because it is rare for anyone to hear about human transmissable tropical fish diseases. There are no posters about it, naturally, in my LFS. So where is someone going to hear about it?
It's new to me. I just learned about it this week. And I used to work for a tropical fish wholesaler as a stockboy.
And most doctors would be hard put to diagnose fish tuberculosis in a person. I found this thread because I wanted to learn more. I have a two year old and I want to know what the dangers are for my family in keeping a tank. Are there other potential problems I also haven't heard about?
I want to now what precautions, and what hazzards are involved, even if relatively rare. For that I want information, not jokes, which apparently killed this thread several years ago.
Thanks to the posters who actually did provide inforrmation. |

I forgot about that story. That Jakets guy was a lunatic. (Sorry buddy, I couldn't resist).
Saft,
many of us have multiple names and post on multiple boards. Even Jakets does.
I don't even need to look up the thread. Me, Craig, Nikki, myself, and many others (probably, even Jakets) put some time into making sure that thread was informative. Luiz (Playa) got really sick. I have a friend here in St. Louis who was in serious condition but luckily his father was a doctor and a reefer too so he survived. (Matt was going to die.....he was having convulsions so thank God that Steve knew what happened and called his dad while the ambulance was on it's way). I have personally had issues before and that was NOT a fun day. I had unpacked about 15 cases of Zoanthidea. I was VERY sick. I actually had many threads go up in many different languages for me. Here's one. Palytoxin Poisoning (Get Well Curt!) - Marine Aquariums of South Africa
The amount of palytoxin varies GREATLY between species but I no longer tell people which Genus nor Species of Zoanthidea are the most dangerous. I want people to wear gloves, wash their hands before rubbing their mucus membranes (eyes, nose, mouth), and take all precautions just in case theirs is dangerous. Most people don't know this, but there are Rhodophytes than can absorb palytoxin, there are Porifera that can absorb palytoxin, there are all sorts of things that are dangerous due to palytoxin or other reasons.
I don't want people to ever be afraid of their tanks, but I do want them to act responsibly and carefully. That Matt person I'm talking about worked at a competing LFS and he, like me, was dealing with animals with more minor amounts of toxin. However, it was the size of the shipment that did him in just like me. Also, some people can have an allergic reaction just from a small amount.
I hope that when someone finds an old thread from a Google search the next time, and joins 3Reef to let us know what they found, we are a little more nice. _________ Curt |
