Default Chemi-Pure

I bought this to clean all the silicate and metals/Phosphates from my 55 gallon as I am having algea problems. After doing a water change of 50% with RO/DI water and useing chemi-pure my Zenia has shriveled up to nothing and wont inflate. Has anyone else used this product? Mt Zenia was doing great before I put in this stuff.

what kind of water paramaters did your current tank water have as compared to the water you used for the water change? if there was a big difference in the new water, it may have thrown things off balance.

The parameters were all good. I also took out the filter portion of my Magnum 350, Just running the Chemi-pure.
If things dont look better this weekend I will take out the Chemi-pure.

I have used Chemi-Pure for years and have never had an adverse reaction. It's only a high grade type of carbon so it should not affect anything negatively. Hope your xenia bounces back ok!

Man they were just going nuts before. Never had any problem. I also added a powerhead. On of those that sweeps with the big sponge filter. I never rinced it in water first but with that carbon u would think ant impurities would be taken out. Mabet the new rezen that I put in my RO/DI filter is bad? I will do a complete parameter test when I get home and post the results.

How long did you run the DI with the new resin before you used the water that came out of it?

"but with that carbon u would think ant impurities would be taken out"

Even if it did take out all impurities, it wouldn't be instant. It takes a while for your total water volume to be filtered.

Is the powerhead that you added blasting the xenia at all during its "rotation?"

I just put in the rezin and made my water. I made sure the powerhead is not doing any real blowing on them. There are also some other variables. I got a bunch of great livesand for my sandbed. It had so many worms that some was clumped togather with worms. Man that is some rich sand. Like thousands of life forms. I added the sand two days after the coral started showing stress so I dont think that was it.

Did you get any instructions with the new resin? Seems to me that most replacement cartridges need to be run for a few hours before you use the water.

I don't think that the addition of live sand would effect your xenia either.

that resin may be part of the problem.
also, chemi-pure is more than just a high grade carbon, it also contains some synthetic resins, sort of like DI resins. IMO i wouldnt use any type of carbon or full spectrum adsorbent on a reef tank, as they also remove the beneficial trace elements from your water column.

That touches on it pfc...

I've heard that xenia needs good iodine levels (.06) and when it dips below they can crash.

Perhaps it's a combo of not dosing or not enough water changes and the chemi-pure possibly removing it?
