Just a quickie!!

I know that some people on here have built their own stands and such and I plan on doing so myself!!!

What kind of stain do you use to stain it? Is it just normal poly or is there a special one used for tank stands?

Almost all stains are oil based, so you should be fine. finish it with some polyurethane. (You can buy marine varnish if you really want)

only thing to be cautious of is make sure you dont have any weight resting on screws/nails everything should be bearing weight on wood on wood with screws just to keep it all straight, i think alot of people here have used gorilla glue as well just for extra strength

I have used the 2 part varnish as it drys quickly and is very hard. After 2 years in the kitchen, around the sink, it still looks new... even after all the spilled salt water and cleaning fish (the salmon we have caught in Puget Sound) on the counter... The wife gets upset, but the cabinets look good....

Thanks!!!

Should I stain with water based or oil? I've heard mixed opinions when dealing with tank stands...

Oil based would normally resist water better
