Would anyone care to hear from a photography teacher and camera store manager

I don't know where you guys been looking, but those prices are high for brand macro's. Not that I am trying to promote my company, as internet sales do less than nothing for my store, but check out ritzcamera.com for better than average prices. The macro's sell under $400

btw.......what's wrong with your pic? great focus on the hippo, stable shot, rule of thirds applied (even if by accident or not) I say GOOD DEAL!

Thanks RCBruce. I guess I'm not happy with the fact that the tang's tail is out of focus and the color is all wrong. Since I took that picture, however, I've learned how to adjust the white balance on the camera and the color is far more true to form than the one I posted. I'm sure that all of us could enjoy some photo tips from you so post `em if you got `em

I set a custom white balance using the sandbed as an "example" of the color white. I'm going to try it again using something else though seeing as my sand is not as white as it used to be now that the tank is a year old. I read an article somewhere that suggested placing the (white) lid of a supplement container in the tank to set the white balance so I'm going to try that.

You have the right idea on the wb. There's a saying in my business, "if the white is white, everything else is right!"

Also realize that a true macro lens has a very shallow depth of field. If everything in your picture is not in a straight line, whatever is forward or behing your focus point may be soft on the focus.
