Rams need very high quality water to survive. They are intolerant of high nitrates and need soft acidic water with a pH between 6-6.5. They also prefer a heavily planted tank. In these settings you will havve a breeding pair in no time. I used to keep Rams 30 years ago and we have just set up a 20g FW planted tank with Rams, Cardinals and Feather Fin rainbow fish.
