Default substrate additive?

Hey,

I've been looking at different substrates for my new setup and was wondering if anyone had some suggestions? I want to have plants and I want them to do well, but I'm not into the high prices I will have to pay for flourite or anything fancy since it is a 180 gallon tank and will cost me a bit. Also, I want plants but I don't need a jungle So far I have purchased 1-3mm gravel for the tank.

What do people think of laterite? Will I need undergravel heating if I decide to do laterite? Has anyone tried Red Sea Flora Root? Any suggestions would be appreciated...
