Default Fish of the Month, March 07 Majestic Angelfish

Common Names: Majestic Angelfish, and Blue Girdled Angelfish

Latin Name: Pomachathus Navarchus

Majestic Angelfish from juvi to adult

Care Level: Moderate, although one of the easier angels to care for.

Reef Safe: With Caution, Nips at stony, soft corals and clam mantles. It generally will not harm SPS corals, but add with caution!!

Temperment: Somewhat shy, getting bolder with age.

Diet: Omnivore. Like with most large angels, marine algae and sponge is a big part of the diet. Meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, and brine shrimp are taken well. Ive found that Prime Reef, Formula 1&2, krill, and algae sheets are eaten at will. Keep the diet varied to keep the angel from getting HLLE (Head and lateral Line Erosion).

Origin: Coral Sea, Indo-Pacific.

Sexing: Differences are unconfirmed at this time. Some suspect the gill spikes indicated sex, males having the larger one, but this is unconfirmed. Majestic Angelfish are often seen in pairs on the reef but also occur alone. The only sure way to know if you have a compatible pair is to slowly introduce two specimens to one another and observe their interactions. Do this only in large aquariums, 150 gallons plus.

Max. Size In Aquarium: Up to 1'. They are very slow growers, taking years to reach maturity.

Minimum Tank Size: 90 gallon, but preferably 100 gallon because it is 5 feet long vs 4.

Personal Notes: Somewhat shy when first introduced, but becoming bolder every day. One of the more reef safe of the large angels. Mine liked to eat zoanthids, but left everything else alone. Bold fish when it comes to territory!! Will protect its cave with all cost. I would recommend a tank that is long, vs a tank that is in a cube style or corner. A well cared for majestic can live years in captivity. One account of over 20 years was documented!!
