new filter?????

my external filter is messing around so i want to get a new one.
but my tank has only been running for around 3 weeks so will me putting a new canister filter on mess up the tank?

shall i put some of the media i have in my current filter onto the new one?
and wash everything from the the new filter with the water thats in my current canister filter?

 

What do you mean by messing around ? Do you have much rock in your tank or is the filter your main biological filter ?

 

yes i have live rock 20kgs in 40 gallon
it works it just leaks and is noisy

 

What make and model filter? Perhaps it can be fixed,if it's the impeller making noise it may not be installed correctly.Where is it leaking? It could be a bad o-ring seal or a bad connection of one of the hoses which could be fixed.If you do replace the filter it would be good to use as much of the media in the new one as possible,except for maybe new carbon if you're usung it.Just rinse the old media in old tank water to save the good bacteria it contains.
