Hey guys! First of all I would like to say hi since this is my first post, but anyways, I was wondering what type of filter to use on a 40 gallon FOWLR tank that I am planning for mid December-mid Febuary. (This is my first tank if that matters). I also am a little confused about live rock. I would rather not spend 250 dollars on 35 pounds so I was wondering if I could get like 5-10 pounds of rock from my LFS (Or Craigslist or something), and then buying dry rock and seeding it. Thanks ahead of time, Frooty.

You can definitely seed dry rock with LR
For filtration go with a sump/fuge

I was thinking about that but the only problem is that the tank I'll be using isn't drilled so I might not be able to do it. Also if I were to do a sump then what filter would I put in it? (Sorry if that's a stupid question lol).

You are on the right track with seeding dry rock. If you can find some reefers near by, you might be able to trade a few pieces of fresh dry rock for some live rock that's been in their tank for a while.

There are lots of good Hang on the back skimmers so you wont need a sump.

I only have a large sump, oversized skimmer and BP reactor with my FOWLR tank

If you want to buy a HOB overflow, plenty of them out there.

Here's my thread showing my DIY- very inexspensive- get all the stuff at any big box home improvement store.

    http://www.3reef.com/forums/i-made/non-drilled-tank-alternatives-my-diy-overflow-140523.html

Also in my Signature is my thread on my DIY sump, etc.

Google these things also, and hybrid a design to fit your needs.
Not everything in this hobby has to be exspensive.

Good luck, and Welcome to 3 REEF!!!

So I'm looking at the Reef Octopus BH100, will that be good? Also so far I have all of this, so if anyone can tell me what more I need equipment wise then please tell me.
    HOB Skimmer
    Tank
    Stand
    RO/DI Unit
    5-10 Pounds of life rock
    20-25 Pounds of dry rock
    Fully submersible heater
    And that's it.

You may want some thing that you can add in carbon and a phosphate reducing product. I think they could go in a hang on filter but if you're able to follow the DIY sump that could work also. If you really like fish, you'll need something to help keep the water clear and to reduce nutrients so you don't get algae issues (although you will go through various algae stages with a new tank).
