I have berlin sump made by essopps. Very nice. I have live rock, culerpa, mangrove plants and some times carbon in it. I also have a huge skimmer down there doing the dirty work. Live sand, clean up crew, and live rock in the main tank. It works.

Berlin method worked for me. I would recommend it to anyone setting up a tank. A sock, LR in the sump, some natural nitrate and phosphate reducers, light it on opposite cycles as your tank, skim it, and send it back to the tank. And the bonus is you can use it for time out for your naughty fish and inverts!!!
