Using crushed coral as media infilter? HI,
I thought of this the other day,
Many of the larger canister filters have media containers, I was thinking about using crushed coral in the filter canister in place of carbon and other media's my thinking is this 1. its super porus it has calcium and other trace minerals it will filter some and may start to grow live bacteria with time. My phos reactor could also have a cup mixed in with the media in there too.
Has anyone done this. I ve read on other forums that carbon is useful but can remove a lot of the organics when fresh and may lower some trace elements, the high flow rate may increase the calcium carbonate release potential. As it become dirty you could flush it with hose I usally do this weekly with my marineland filters. I use well water to lesson the impact of chlorine it can sterilize your filter media just rinsing.
I have seen some similar media in those tidal sumps that have something that looks like carbonate in teh large wheels that turn.
