Yes the bracket sets on the sumps rim or mounted to a support the white sock part sets down into the sump about 14 inches long .. I would not use one on a reef system.. filters out the corals food a little passive mechanical works O.K but this is just over kill to me why remove the food to just add more ?

I thought it would get all the fine particles out of the water and keep the tank clearer looking. All the "dust" floating around in a tank drives me nuts. Thought it would be beneficial to the skimmer not sucking up chunks of food and such in the pump.

Dust ? what type of dust the skimmer is not doing its job if its dust.. I have never to this day mechanically filtered a marine tank as close as I ever came was with Old Under/Gravel plates and fish only systems. This system new ? or are you maybe seeing micro bubbles ? I'd think thats what you are seeing .. cut main pumps off let it settle a hr or so see if it clears up.

Just the particles that floats around in the aquarium. I dont have the tank set up yet...i got pieces every in the basement while im trying to figure out how everything will go and whats best. I got a euro reef skimmer 135....first sump, always used HOB equipment and used like an aquaclear just to filter extra stuff floating around.

You set it up correctly there will be nothing floating around . I have never had anything to float as for particles when you set this up don't rinse the sand either use it dust and all the skimmer won't be needed for a few months as it will remove coralline spores also.. if you seed the system for sand fauna and coralline algae. Oh the aragonite dust that is not rinsed out is just a great fast buffer booster aka PurpleUp less the price (:
