Just wondering what is the best or is there much difference, sumps or canister?

most people would prefer a sump compared to a canister filter. Sumps add more water, place to hide equipment, and even set up a refugium.

Cannisters can be nitrate and phosphate havens and they are a pain to clean. Sumps are a better way to go as mentioned above. More options with a sump to make life easier.

I've always used an Ehiem canister in my reef tanks and it's always done a great job however if I had the time , space and $ I would definitly set up a sump .

If you are thinking about a sump, then I assume you have the space for one.
They are great to hide equipment, including your canister filters plumbing. Canister filters are very effective and the combo (sump and canister) would get you extra water volume.

Another thing to consider is that a sump is a lot cheaper than a good canister filter, if you build the sump yourself.
