| Phosphate reactor? Hello everyone, My tank is starting to get alot of cyano on the sand and rocks, most likely due to the flake foods and frozen foods. So Im planning on buying a phosphate reactor possibly phosphate/carbon unit. Any recommendations?
Thanks, have been really busy and haven't been able to be online much. Did a search but want an updated answer. _________ 90 gallon tank with center overflows, 44 gallon custom sump/fuge, Tek T5 retrofit 4x54 bulbs, Reef Octopus nw200 protein skimmer, Iwaki WMD40RLXT return pump (changed to panworld 100pxx),Knop c ca reactor, PA light house controller. | All the reactors serve the same purpose. If you are getting cyanos then it might be from dead spots in the water column. Can't remember how you are bringing your water back from the sump but try to move that flow around or add a PH for a little extra water movement.

| Ok thanks, It could be the flow as well, since I only have 1200gph coming from the sump supplying two returns. Hopefully this week Ill have get everything hooked up (auto-topoff,lighthouse controller, tank cabinet etc..)
Thanks |

| That's not much flow in that tank. Maybe you can get a Tunze or plumb in a closed loop some how for extra flow.
Get that OM valve off Turbo if he isn't going to hook it up. |

| I think im going to do a closed loop from the top somehow but that will have to wait, thats a totally different project on its own. I guess the work is never done |

| YOu still could get a phosban reactor. They are not that expensive and would reduce your phosphate levels in the tank. But more flow sounds liek a great idea as well. |

| Cool. That should be nice.
Although I wasn't a huge fan of the phosban media.
It's really fine and red and even if you dial in the pump some will get out through the sponge and into your sump and tank. I put aquarium floss on the end of the return hose in a fishnet to get more and I replaced it once or twice a week.
The phosphate media I preferred was the aluminum oxide stuff - Phosguard. Frankly that was the only product where I noticed a rapid reduction in algae. I didn't notice anything with Phosban. You still need to rinse Phosguard, but it's easier to deal with and won't leach out of the canister. |
