Default Nitrate Build Up
Is it true that using any type of filter media (cartridge, sponge, floss, etc..) will contribute to a build up of nitrates in a reef tank??

I have 26 lbs of rock in a 15 gallon tank with a MODIFIED skilter 250. I am using the filter cartridge in the skilter, but I am considering removing it. Should I??

15 gallon tank w/10 gallon refugium, modified skilter 250, dual actinic/dual daylight, 30 lbs live rock, 20lbs live sand, 9 astrea, 5 blue leg hermits, 2 brittle stars, 1 sand sifting stars, zoanthids, green star polyps, Rose BTA, False clown, Citron Goby, Skunk Cleaner.

If you clean the filter media everyday it won't cause nitrates, but once the junk gets in it and starts rotting it will be nitrate city. Keep it clean.

&&Right now I'm in the middle of a conversion from reef to Discus/ planted aquarium. Hair algae beat me down. Maybe a nano in the future. Everything screwed up so I'm converting to FOWLR. Wish me luck.
