I've been hearing a lot of good things about these Koralias lately. How do they provide erratic current? Do they cycle on and off by themselves?

No, unless you have a wave maker or on timers.

You can't use them on a hard start wave maker.. They will shear the impeller's lock pin. Not to mention the clicking and clacking every few mins.

So they provide great flow, but not necessarily an erratic current.

Scubagator87 is on a roll

Question

I think the koralia is looking alot more feasible for me moneywise (college students do need to eat, lol), so i shall explore that option further.
Also I was wondering if you could elaborate on this post a little further?

Will getting rid of the wheel get rid of helpful bacteria that my tank needs? My filter is a double cartridge so how will i run charcoal and floss alternatively? (and why do i need to?) Just curious
,
"If your bio-wheel filter still has the wheel on it I would remove the wheel. The wheel will eventually build-up all sorts of nitrates. You can still use the filter by running floss and charcoal alternatively (one time floss, next time charcoal, next time floss, etc..)."
