Heaters Temperature Problems.

So luckily I have nothing in my tank yet. but i have 2 heaters running different brands. And i set them both to 79 and my temperature in the tank settled at 85 degrees. So what do i do?

Should I try to figure out what to tune them both to to get the 79 I was aiming for?

What temperature should I be trying to get?

Is it uncommon for heaters to be unable to self regulate properly?

I checked the temperature with 2 different gauges so i am pretty sure the temperature is 85.

I live in Oakland CA and i dont think its too hot.

I work in Oakland, it's definitely not too hot these days.

I personally keep my heaters at 74.

There are other contributors to heat that could be in play here and usually are... your lights (and how close they are), if you have a glass lid, a lot of powerheads and a throttled back sump pump can all add heat. The size of the aquarium is a factor too.

How big is tank and what do you have in there for hardware?

Unless you have a really big tank one heater should be enough. My 120 gallon only has one heater (300w) which I've set at 76F and the temp is a steady 78F.
