fluval question

i was reading through the forums and read someone say the a fluval was a bad idea. because it may lead to a high nitrate level. i do have a fluval on my tank right now and have been thinking on seting up a fuge. and if it is true about canister filters i may speed up the process of installing a fuge. does anyone have an opinion on the canister theory?

As long as you always clean/replace the filter and don't let it go it is OK. I use my Magnum 350's all the time and have 0 nitrates but if you overfeed and the waste gets sucked in the filter if not cleaned out it will cause high nitrates. Most say that if you have a good skimmer and plenty live-rock and a DSB than that is all you need for taking care of the nitrates.

how often should you clean the canister filter? i do it every two months. is that too long of a period of time?
