Default Diatom filters

I don't hear much about Diatom filters anymore. Are they still being used or has a new product replace them?

Talking

I only use my diatomic filter on my freshwater tanks that were green due to algae, but that's about it. For me the diatomic filter makes for easy fix for a paticular problem not long term use. But that's just me, I could definately be wrong. Ive never use it on a saltwater tank, not sure if you can or if you would want to.

I know you can use them to polish the water. I was just wondering how many people use them to do that? And the cost of them? they have went down since it has been in my radar for quite some time.

I have not used a diatom filter in 11 years and I don't know any one who has.
As I recall the salt was always gunking the thing up and god was it noisy

How do you guys and gals keep the water looking crystal clear? Looking at the photos most of your tanks are nice and clear.

I have one and still use it from time to time on my reef tanks, especially if I'm scrubbing algae or any other type of tank cleaning.

Where did you get the filter from. I was looking at foster and smith but they only have the powder.

30 years ago I used a Vortex diatom filter when cleaning my tank. Now I use a HOT magnum with the micron filter to polish the water.
