Default Cyclone Bio-Filter. Is good?

This is my first post so if I spell somthing wrong don't make fun of me!

I'm new to saltwater, so bear with me. Setting up a new tank, it is a 54g corner unit. I bought a cpr overflow and a cyclone 192(400gph)(close to a 5g sump) wet/dry w/ skimmer in it. I plan on having a 1in. live sand bed and 30lbs. of live rock. If and when I get the correct lighting does this seem like enough filtration to have a small amount of corals?

Welcome to 3Reef!!

I think that you may be a little light on the sand and rock if you want corals. I think others will agree that 2" of sand would be better. I have a 55 gallon tank and have 40 lbs of LR already and will probably get another 50 or so before I try keeping corals. The LR really becomes your main biological filter. You will also need a protien skimmer to keep down the DOC (Dissolved organic compounds) i.e. junk in the water.

One of the nice things you will find about 3reef is, we like to help!!

Mike

Edit: Oops! did not notice that the wet/dry had a skimmer, forget the above comment about getting one!

Mike

Welcome to 3 Reef!

Corals don't add too much in the way of bioload....do you plan to keep fish as well? The only issue I can see is nitrates. Regular water changes should be able to keep them low if you don't stock too heavily.

The sand won't add too much in the way of filtration...just appearance

Thanks I appreciate the info and support!

I will have some fish. Probably a butterfly, some clown, and some goby. Nothing too much.
