Chillers?

Are chillers mainly to counter act the heat from Lighting and or high temp climates?
Just curious because i have my Corallife fixture (not retrofit) resting ontop of my canopy (top removed) about 6" from the top of my tank, and with the computer fans that i added my tank temp never goes up.

You have a good alternative. May need more during high outside temp periods. Room AC works fine or a chiller if you want to invest $ in one.

Thats what they do and the only reason for a chiller . Because in some areas and building environments heat is always a issue and by just using simple fans will not remove the heat molecules from the water faster then the extracted heat molecule migrate back to the cool water like a liquid heat sink.. So a chiller is a must for some as fans just can't do it.

well fortunately for me i live in SF bay area so my outside temp never goes over 80deg but the average for where i am at is 60-70deg.

Humidity plays a huge roll in the evaporative cooling factor..Like here in Ct. its easy to keep them cool with fans as it seldom gets hot and never humid although many locals seem to think it does (: Now unlike in my home in Va outside of Richmond its not easy to rely on fans or house A/C even . What you can do if you fear it ever getting really hot or until you know for sure is to keep some large freezer bags of R/O water and drop them in the sump to float. Some use 2 liter bottles some make huge r/o ice cubes in small buckets or large bowels even I like the bottles or bags as they do not effect the salinity levels

I run a chiller because I can not evap enough water to keep the water temp in check. I plan on adding some fans to my sump. This should cut down on the amount of time the chiller is on.
Even now with the temp around 4C my chiller still comes on

I remember back one summer in Australia I would go to work and leave my appartment wide open and 4 2ltr bottles of ice in my sump to keep my tank cool. Finaly I decided to DIY a cooler, BOY you should have seen this thing it was a deep freezer that I removed the lid from and replaced with a solid 1 1/2" peice of timber drilled it to run my hoses in and out ,Inside I had a sealed 22gal drum that the water cooled it . thinking back I could have just used coiled h0se, but it worked well and did the job,
Mind you summer was like 35-40 deg during the day
