I went to different Big Al's location in the Toronto area today (on Dundas Rd in Mississauga, for those familiar with the area). I was initially pleased to see a large coral selection (as compared to other locations I have been to). Typically, I am lucky to find one or two corals that appeal to me when I go the Big Al's locations that I frequent. Today, I would have had a hard time choosing which to buy.

When I looked closer, there were dozens of Aiptasia in their four coral tanks. I saw several full grown ones, and when I looked closely at the egg crate they were using at the bottom of their tanks I could see many tiny Aiptasia migrating to different corals along the egg crate.

I didn't buy anything. In fact, I only went there to get some shells for my hermits. They offered me some empty snail shells from their tanks for free, but I politely declined that after seeing the Aiptasia.

There were a couple of other issues too. Three of the fist in their reef DT had spots on them that looked like ich. There was also a large dead fish floating in their live rock curing tanks.

Since I am new to the hobby, my question is, am I correct in totally avoiding a store like this, or am I being too picky?

I guess my question is more along the lines of what should my general tolerance level for that sort of thing be when visiting a LFS?

I romoved the floor, the walls concrete and then the old lead pan. Got everything out and the subfloor looked ok, WRONG! I stepped in the shower to start cleaning the rest of my mess and my left foot went through the floor! My leg went all the way through up to my waist and I almost went all the way through to the basement, which was about 10' to the concrete floor below. Man I got lucky today!

I just added some more live rock to my 120 fowlr tank. Lately I have been hearing clicking, so last night I turned out the lights and waited in anticipation with my flashlight. Seeing movement in a rock, I pulled out the piece in question and dipped it in freshwater. Not one, but 2 good size red mantis (3 inches) fell out. I scrambled around and decided to convert the hospital tank to a mantis tank. My brother is probably going to take the spare since there were two. I am pretty psyched about this! I would love advice and thoughts on setup. Right now it is a barebottom 29 gallon biocube, but Im thinking of adding sand. Of course I put in some of my live rock pieces for them, too.

Hey everyone,

I recently bought a used 72 Gallon Bowfront off Craig's List. It basically came with everything i needed to get in to the hobby. I went and bought 100 pounds of live rock and 80 pound of Fuji Pink sand.

I have been dying to Get fish but i have been holding out till today. Today i bought:

30 Hermit crabs
12 snails
1 Cleaner Shrimp
1 Scooter Blenny
1 Yellow Tang

I already have 3 Damsels that i used to cure the tank with.

I am excited.

I originally had a wet/dry system but upgraded it to a DIY 20 gallon refugium. I'm not sure what kind of Lighting i have but its coralife and has 2 10k 65 Wat and 2 antic lights.

I do have some questions though hopefully someone can help me answer.

In my rufugium i have a red substance growing that spreads quick. Is this good?
I also think the flow through the refugium is to fast, if i was to add a valve to the pump to decrease the flow would i burn up my pump?

I am working on pictures. over the weekend I reset all the live rock and the picture i have below is before. I will repost the most recent here in a couple of hours.

On Friday I am going to place a order with Bluezooaquatics.com for:
1 Blue hippo Tang
1 Fox Face
1 red scooter Blenny
1 yellow watchmen Goby
2 clowns
1 purple anemone
1 long spine sea urchin.

Should i get them all at once or space them out?
