What would make the stem part of my zoa colony lenghten...? When I bought it they were much shorter, closer to the LR. The 1st picture is when I got them...

Low flow. High flow will cause them to hug the rock.

My zoa's also do this- they are actually in pretty high flow. Is it possible that they are reaching for more light?

I bought some that were very extended at my LFS. Under MH they are very healthy and like your original picture. What type of lighting do you have? Try moving them closer to the light.

PC lighting...I thought light too. I will move them up slowly. Suggestions on how much a day?

(My) zoas are pretty tough. I wouldn't worry about cooking them. If they're at the bottom move them midway. If they're at the middle move to top. Make sure that wherever they end up (liking where they are) that they are going to stay. They will spread quickly.
