Hum mystery question . I think you are asking why the leather you have is not doing or growing as well for you inside of your tank as opposed to how the same specimen grows and flourishes in someone else's tank ?
If this is correct tell me where your water parameters are setting at and what type of lighting and water flows are your corals exposed to and live in.. What supplements do you add ?

Adequate lighting, good water flow, iodine supplement and you should be fine IMO!!!! They aren't that hard to keep.
Oh, one other very important thing is the lighting temperature of the bulbs(kelvin). The color of your bulbs will play a part in how quickly your leathers grow!!!!!!

exactly tangster i am wondering why mine doesn't do as well as others, in other tanks. water is good. 250w mh's. medium flow. i dont stay up on the supplements much but i use the same ones every else is using. i just don't remember to add them as often as i should. all of my other coral are growing. some of them grow too much. just not the leather.

hum 250 M/H might be the problem I find most all leathers do better with a moderate light. and a little water flow it has to be just enough to rinse the coral.. Iodine s one are most get in to problems Not a huge fan its a real algae fertilizer a good complete balanced element supplement is all you need I like and only use Kent's Essential elements and then at 1/2 dose and half as often. You do water changes .
I find every type of coral I ever kept did better with no water changes Buts thats me. But maybe a lower part of the tank like mid to lower sections and tweak the water and add a bit of their essential ? also Carbon will help if their is a problem with other corals releasing their protective toxins . Does this finger ever scrunch and slough off dead skin on a regular basis ? Are the NO'3's in low amounts also PO4's They do feed on these a little but when they get to high then it will effect them ..
