My wife picked up this Cat's Paw a few weeks ago. It seemed to be doing fine until we noticed over the last few days that it has some dark spots forming on a couple of the stalks.

Any ideas about what's going on here? Solution?

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
It looks to me that it is loosing tissue, but hard to see tell for sure the images are somewhat blurry.

It also looks very pale in coloration to me as well.

What type of lighting is it under and where is it placed in the tank?

It's at the very top of the reef...maybe eight inches below the waterline. It's under a 175W MH and Marineland LED combo. I'll try to get some better pics up in a bit.

    Ok thanks!

Was it the same color when you purchased it?

Also sometimes when they retract their polyps it may appear like a black dot, but there should be live tissue surrounding it.

What are your alk, ca and mg numbers? How much flow does it get?

My wife says she thinks it's more pale than it was when we got it. I'm not sure. This section of the coral looks ill...doesn't look like it's just retracted polyps.

That looks like those areas are dead so I would remove them, cutting back in the good areas a little bit, then do an iodine dip on the rest of the coral.

Would it be too much to ask for some instructions about cutting this coral? Can I get appropriate iodine at the LFS?
