No, I don't think it is necessary. I have a 75gal. reef tank and I change just 5 gallons of water per week. I use ro water from a local pet shop. Sometimes I will us Kalkwasser to replenish any lost water through evaporation. Becareful, because when you have evaporation, it is just the water taht is evaporating, NOT THE SALT in the water, so when you add water make sure it isn't salt water at 1.024 or what your salt level is in your water. Or eventually your salt water level will continually go up. The good thing about dosing with Kalkwasser, is that you are dripping it into your tank slowly with fresh water only, so you are adding calcium to you tank and replenishing the water lost through evaporation. Be extremely careful though with using Kalkwasser, because it can increase your ph in the tank quickly, causing stress to your corals, inverts and fish!!!!!!!read on how to do it!!but do it slow and alittle goes along way.

the purpose of changing water out of a tank is to reduce the quantity of nitrates, nitrites, phosphates, and ammonia.
When water evaporates it does not take any of these chemicals with it.
