Well they are considered hard to keep. They usually don't make it past 6mnths in captivity because they usually are deprived of food. I have one, it's very beautiful and it was cheap so I thought why not. It's doing good so far. If you get one I would definitly add phytoplex and zooplex to your feeding. You may have to use a turkey bastor to blow it in the area of the scallop.

Try some of the many vibrant colored zoos offered for sale!!! Alot easier to keep as well.
Or go with a Tridacna Clam!
Just a suggestion

Listen dude, I'm not picking on you so please don't have another blowout. It's just that I can't let a comment like yours slide, regardless of who posted it. It just happens to be you in this case.

Don't you think that's a bit irresponsible of a view? Go ahead and buy it. Yeah I know it's got like zero chance of living for any real length of time, who cares, it's CHEAP!!

I can't think of another pet/live animal related hobby that has been under such scrutinity recently than this one. Everyone has the responsibility, or at least they should feel like they do, to take care of their charges in the best possible manner. The key word is not simply survive, it's THRIVE. No matter what monetary value is placed on it.

Obviously the original poster is on the right track since they asked first. Why go and ruin it? It's already doomed to die since it was taken from the wild. Buying it at the LFS only shows them that even though they are sure to die with a quickness, it's cheap enough that they can unload them fast and they'll be someone elses problem. Then they buy more and more.

There's already speculation that the oceans will be devoid of ANY life by 2048. That's well within most of our lifetimes. Attitudes like "yeah they never live long, but buy it cause it's cheap so who cares if it dies" aren't helping anything.

I know someone will post "Oh but I have one for 4 months now and it's doing great". Please save it. That's hardly a milestone. If you post that you've got a fruit fly that you kept alive for 4 months, now there's something worthy of a pat on the back. But months for something that would normally live years is hardly worth bragging about, or a testament to your husbandry skills.

Like I said. I'm NOT picking on you. DON'T take offense. You just happen to be the one who said it. And since you said it, you gotta take all that results from saying such things.

No problem , I've tried more than a few animals in my tanks over the years and some seemed to fair much better than others - as far as the flame scallops it's not a large investment but that doesn't mean I advocate cruelty - and it really isn't me who's deciding about this- I haven't had sucess with these guys and wouldn't get one again but I do know lots of people who like to try thier hand at keeping delicate livestock- no offense taken.

Good luck Kevink, I hope it works out fine for you.
JustPhish I think we are on the same basic page but have a little trouble with our symantics- I treat my reef babies with the same love and care I treat my children!

Hate to say it but I have to agree with pissypants. I will try and be more supportive though. I had an elec flame sallop for 1.5 yrs. They way I kept it alive is with a baster and phytoplex... right up on it. Did great until it decided to go behind some rock. Couldn't feed it anymore, and the bad part was I kept trying and thinking it was working until a few weeks later and I saw my pistol shrimp moving a part of its shell. my exp is you have to darn near squirt phyto right at the dang thing... good luck with that.
