Default New Orleans Aquarium

First off I hope for the best all the people affect by Hurricane Katrina and hope they get the help they need. I visited New Orleans 2 years ago and had a chance to go to there Public Aquarium down town by the casino. It was a great aquarium but I wonder what has happen to it. It is right next to the river so that can't be good. They had systems of tens of thousands gallons fresh and salt, beauty fish. Like a 30' tall tank with sharks and large SW fish. Just awesome. I can't imagine what there keepers are going through right now because you now if you ran one of those places you wouldn't leave it for anything. I was just wondering if anybody heard anything?

P.S. I donated to the Red Cross and love New Orleans so don't think I don't care about the people.

What do people think when they build 3' under sea level, between a lake that is 6' above them? Same goes for the outer bank islands and people living on cliffs (Malibu, etc.) or under them. It's not a question of *IF*, it's a question of when. Every year hurricanes destroy homes on the outer banks, every year insurance pays some and they rebuild, just to get knocked down yet another year. In Cali they keep building sea walls to divert wave action from doing what it needs to do, create sand by erroding the cliffs. Errosion is needed. It's not natures idea to have people living there, it's the stubborn humans. With out the sand, the wave action is MUCH greater. The sea will take down all the sea walls at one point, and all those homes WILL be in the sea.

It's times like this, that I really appreciate just how the native Americans lived. They NEVER placed villages on flood plains, never. Why build dikes and canals to alleviate flooding that happens EVERY year? Galviston Texas went thru this same thing (Katrina) many many years ago, they were smart about rebuilding though. They brough the land mass up around 18" from sea level, and they haven't looked back. FWIW, I think this was in the 30's?

I know I'm guilty of living in earthquake country, but I do everything possiable to make sure I'm safe here. I've never lived in a brick building. I store food/water/medical supplies and other emergancy items just in case. I even eat said food, drink said water and use any other perishables prior to going bad, and replentish them. I don't and won't, live on or under a cliff. I typically scope outs of anyplace I go and I stay informed thru many different media sources and types. I even carry emergancy supplies in my trunk Being thru all the medic first aid classes, and rescue classes, I've come to terms that bad things happen very often and it's our duty to be prepared. Oh, and I'm heavily armed

I really do feel for all that were affected, please don't get me wrong. Most didn't have a choice to live there, poverty is pretty rampant down there. I have a friend that lost his house, car, all pets and his business. Same with his dad. Wiped clean. They only have a couple changes of clothes and some canned food that was in the attic. There is no chance of them rebuilding, they're outa there for good.

Gresham you’re completely right, anyone who is trying to profit during this time of misfortune have some serious issues!!! And that sniper is just a sick F*$#@R!!!

As far as the victims go, it's a complete tragedy and you have to feel sorry for them but let's face it that just part of the inherent risk in living in that region. It's not like it's the first time this has occured.

The only real "ironic" thing here is that Bush took back the $20million that was set aside to rebuild the levies there in order to help finance the war. Go figure!!!

I also agree, We were just discussing the same thing at work yesterday, What in the world would cause us arrogant humans to think we could control nature in that way? Why would we build a city below sea level almost surrounded by water and being so arrogant as to think that we would be safe to live there, So safe that they didn't even have a plan to deal with this type of thing if it did happen.

I also feel terrible about what the people are going threw there it is unmanageable for me to feel what they are living, My god what a tragedy. ..................................... John

I saw what happened to the aquarium in a helicopter fly over that was on the news. The aquarium is completely leveled. Absolutely destroyed. I wondered if there was a small chance anything survived. I doubt it. It was gut wrenching.

I don't believe any president can make a budget cut without the authorization of congress....can he? I would be curious as to the voting record of each representative and senator on this very issue. I believe the cut was in '03 so, it may not have made much difference anyway. So fault is not just with Bush. The money was cut not completely, but by a lot to fund the war AND for homeland security. I feel homeland security is more of a Federal issue than the levees in a particular state. Since when did it become a federal job to maintain and repair areas of each individual state? Goverment cannot win. They spend too much on this and not enough on that. Regardless of what they do, it is not right. Why not tax us at 50% to 80% and pay for everything? (I don't advocate that by the way, sarcasm intended!)

Don't get me wrong, I feel horribly for all the folks who are living (and dying) in this tragedy. Mainly the poor are affected and that is sad because they had no options. But I beg to differ with all the politicizing that is going on about this. Like Gresham says, disaster was bound to strike sooner or later. Rivers and lakes being rerouted, the levees have been sinking for years (a problem of the STATE I might add) and yeah, being waaaaay below sea level is never a promising thing, especially when you live ... ummm, by the sea!
