Sigh. Ya know fellas, just because you don't want to use these products in your fishtanks doesn't make those who use it stupid or uneducated. The "foot powder" jokes are getting really old.

BUT, it seems to produce more problems than it's worth , such as producing some type of food source to kick start a hair algae problem in the tanks that this method is used in.

( From a LARGE amount of reading and seemingly people having issues both here on this site and other sites/threads and from researchers such as PHD"S and professors with extensive research in the reef hobby field. )
I also considered it and I did it. I never had LHA in 10 yrs until recently. I started using this "method" about 4-5 weeks ago and started to get LHA out of no where. I stopped dosing this "method" about a week and a half ago to see what will happen. I had to go out and buy 30 snails and 3 turbos to consume the LHA. 2 back to back 25g WC's. I shouldnt have started this "method" in the first place. Like they say, " dont fix whats not broken". Im starting to wonder if he really knows what hes doing/preaching. Does he know the long term effects of using this "method"? Luna

Foot powder was never mentioned in this thread...

We never said anyone was uneducated ma'am. We would never say such a thing as assanign as that!

We are just simply debating the use of 'Borax!'. If we are wrong for learning from each other and their mistakes, then please stop me.

I wasn't trying to change the way you do things, if you do these things to your tank, go for it! I didn't know this, I definitely cannot read minds over the internet. No ESP here. I think you are referring to the post in 'WILDREEFS 220 Tank' thread. That was a joke for me and wild's enjoyment, if you read and/or watched the video, we were joking with Bogie as well. I see no harm done really, whats so bad about cracking jokes? I will also saying again... Where here are we preaching about changing peoples methods?

Luna was telling us that he tried a said method on this forum, and it did some funky stuff to his tank, that wasn't there in 10 years of being fine.. (LHA)

Well the old saying there is more than one way to skin a cat comes to mind, but some just work a little better without such severe consequences, others may not carry as much merrit, and long term success.

Hmmmm

Last May, I started fixing a LFS that was destined for bankrupcty. When I finished the store I built a quarantine facility of more than 9000 gallons. That's more water than most LFS's even have in their main store.

I was managing almost 20,000 gallons of water daily and if you think I was managing Calcium and alkalinity levels with store-bought products, you're fooling yourselves because I had to make sure payroll got covered, utilities got covered, etc. At home, I prefer store bought products because they are much easier and I'm lazy. However, I know how these products are made and they don't cause algae unless they are complexed with a sugar (gluconate). P and N and algal spores along with proper amounts of Iron, Iodine, Carbon, and lighting cause algae. You have to have ALL of them for an algae problem. Unless you are using an alkalinity supplement with a gluconate binder, you aren't going to have any impact on algae one way or another no matter how you supplement your alkalinity.

Why don't you take a gander at this. The address for Empire State Varnish Company Empire State Varnish Company Inc. | Brooklyn, NY | Company Profile, Research, News, Information, Contacts and B-ionic Two Parter seem rather similar don't you think?ESV Product Catalog I know how B-Ionic is made.

This discussion reminds me of a customer who didn't want Seachem Kalkwasser, they wanted Kent Kalkwasser. Calcium hydroxide is Calcium hydroxide is Calcium hydroxide. There's some people on this thread who should be ashamed of themselves and embarassed because they made themselves look foolish. Before Jack Kent sold the company, I knew him and I know how Superbuffer dKH is made. Tom Weatherwax was his second in command and now owns Blue Life. Guess what? I know him too and I know how he makes his buffers. Oh wait a minute, I knew Rusty from Seachem too and I know how they make their buffers. Heck, I even understand why Seachem Marine Buffer is different from Seachem Reef Buffer. Somehow I doubt previous posters on this thread do though without doing substantial research.

No matter how you are buffering your tank, you are putting THE EXACT SAME CHEMICALS FROM THE EXACT SAME ORIGINAL SUPPLIERS.

Saying I tried a new alkalinity buffer and I got hair algae is just as silly as saying, I tried this food and got excellent polyp extension (google chemoreception...just because polyps are extended doesn't mean they are feeding).

Hey Curt, Im assuming this statement is directed to me. As I have stated before, my current tank has been up and running for almost 10 yrs now and I never had an algae issue. I have exhausted every possible reason for the outbreak and have come to this conclusion, as silly as it may sound. Its too much of a coincidence that I have it now after following this method. I could be wrong, it wouldnt be the first time. I can't help to think why you dont use this method in your home but do use it in your LFS. If this was a method to be used in large systems, like a LFS, why was this small, but significant detail left out? Im not bashing anyone, but if your going to offer a method, please make sure you give it correctly. After all, some ppl have thousands of dollars invested in their tanks. I dont feel ashamed or embarassed b/c I voiced my opinion, the truth of the matter is, we all do that here at 3Reef.
I have researched this method before I injected my statements. Most, if not all, have said that they dont recommend this method and this includes the famous Anthony Calfo and Randy Holmes-Farley. If I have mis-diagnosed my problem, I will be the first to apologize in public. I have nothing to hide or feel ashamed about. After all, we are all humans and make mistakes. Luna
