| the google stuff Hey folks -
Just a little explanation on the Google stuff popping up lately on 3reef.
Simply put, the Google ads are the money maker here on a day to day basis now that I am filtering out the nonsense sites and keeping the relevant ones.
3reef has a dedicated server and a bunch of expensive software that have yearly licenses and is in the red. This is nothing alarming. 3reef has been in the red for years. I am not good at the making money thing.
No worries, 3reef isn't going anywhere and it will always remain online because I believe in the cause - that is helping to provide the knowledge and the platform to share experiences that is friendly and fun and to help so that fewer of our ocean friends end up dying or suffering.
I also want you to know that nearly all the money that 3reef makes goes back into 3reef. I hope to take the additional revenue from these ads and finally get the 3reef store online that many have asked for over the years with shirts and what not. Beyond that I want to market 3reef better. There is some software I wish to purchase to aid in this, but it's not cheap. 3reef has about 38 inbound links on the web. That's pathetic. I need to change that.
Along these lines, I want to put an ad in FAMA magazine after the above is done to promote an upcoming giveaway and increase membership. Some of you may recall previous ones where 3reef gave away a Finnex aquarium, another was a Tunze Osmolator, etc. I always try to make them exciting and the upcoming one should not disappoint. 3reef sponsors have always been very supportive of these events and we should support them when we can.
So I hope this helps explain the situation. I always keep an open book here and I want you all to know that this is an effort to help lead to a better 3reef down the road. I am proud of this site - I think it has many features you won't find elsewhere. I also want to say I will not saturate the site much further and I want to keep a balance with 3reef sponsors as they are very important to us.
Just wanted to let you know the motivation behind it.
Sincerely,
matt |

| Matt,
If you are talking about that non-obtrusive banner ad to the left of coral reefers post, I think we can handle that. |

Marc. | Isn't that what happens on those BAD Sites
It doesn't bother me either, and we KNOW that you are dedicated to the site or else it would have shut down long ago.
Thanks,
Jim
