"Zoanthid, Notice that this word contains only a single "o." A zoo is a place where animals are kept on display, whereas zo-(rhymes with toe) is a prefix meaning "animal." This is a simple point, but I can't overstate how it grates on the ears of folks who know better. My advice in any endeavor would be to know the correct pronunciations of its words; otherwise we seem less-informed than we truly are."

How are the babies doing?

I have just set up a tank to raise cardinal fish. I'm getting a breeding pair from a friend who doesn't have the time to raise them.

I lost all of them. I had one hopeful one but he disappeared? From what I learned...do NOT put them in a separate cage or in a small barrier inside your main tank. They loose the skills of survival. When the cardinals let them go they should be ready. Just feed them by turkey baster and mini/baby brine shrimp.

Hey Zak, keep an eye on your Banggais, they'll likely spawn once a month and you'll know they've spawned when the male stops eating. 21-24 days later you'll have viable babies ready to be captured.

I'm sorry to hear you lost your first batch (it took me 2 years to get viable hatched offspring from my 2 pairs which are reluctant to hold). You were feeding baby brine shrimp, yes? Were you enriching them with anything (HUFA enrichment with products like Selcon is generally VERY beneficial if not essential for rearing all marine fish)?

For those that brought up the "red list" - that is 100% TRUE. The very short story, in 2007 the US proposed the listing of Banggai Cardinals with CITES - that fell appart for political reasons. Banggais DID get on the IUCN Redlist as an Endangered Species, however unlike CITES, the IUCN Redlist is put out by a non-profit, it has no legal bearing/binding/teeth. So it's up to hobbyists to demand captive bred fish and be willing to pay the higher price for captive bred banggais ( most professional marine breeders WILL NOT work with Banggais because they are viewed as unprofitable!!!!! ). Here's a link to more info on the subject.

Marine Ornamental Fish & Invert Breeders :: View topic - Bangaii Cardinalfish listed as Endangered on IUCN Red List

This is one of the main reasons the Banggai Cardinalfish was chosen as the "easy species" for our 2008 Breeder's Challenge. It's a fish that virtually any hobbyist can at least have a POTENTIAL SHOT at rearing sucessfully...while it's the "guppy of saltwater fish breeding" I have to say, they aren't a guppy!

FWIW,

Matt

FWIW,

Matt
Thanks for the input Matt. About a month after my loss I saw the male have things in his mouth. hurray!...but... No babies were produced. He could have eaten them.? I will wait to see what happens this month.

When I first saw the little babies I began feeding them baby brine shrimp. Boy they loved it. They swam around like the parents and gobbled it up. I miss them. I want more babies. Again...I will not capture them. I will let them live in the tank. The rest of my fish did not care about them. The left them alone. I will feed them with my turkey baster.

Zak
