First, a MUST read in the Randy Holmes-Farley article in the Reference Articles. That article is far more comprehensive and accurate than anything I could attempt.

In short, all organisms that consume other living or once living organisms excrete ammonia. In reef aquariums, fish, crabs, snail, bacteria that eat organic matter, etc. all excrete ammonia. When a fish dies, the bacteria that eat it in the decay process excrete ammonia. Ammonia is always produced in Reef Aquariums....

Well it's been a long time since I've added anything to my blog. We went through a terrible spell of GHA, and all of our fish were dying. For a while, we thought we might just give up the hobby. Instead, we took everything out of the tank & scrubbed it in salt water, cleaned the sand & picked off any visible GHA. It's been up and running again for about 4 weeks. Have some algae, but nothing too bad. Bought a yellow watchman goby & he's doing fine. We are tempted to just put one more...
