Seining

Posted 05-27-2009 at 05:52 AM by Beaun (65 Gallon Temperate Planted Aquarium)

Its been a while since i have updated so I figured I would do such. My brother and I decided to go seining on Saturday to get some more local fish for the tank. So we got the 30 foot sein net from my work and headed east to Montauk (the far east end of Long Island). We went to one of the more secluded spots and dropped the net in and did a long sein. We ended up with a good catch and took out the better looking fish that we wanted. I ended up with 1 large silverside, 4 stripped killifish, 2 Mumichugs,...

Water changes a must??

Posted 05-21-2009 at 10:56 AM by Optimist

I have to add my argued opinion here...
I never say anything because I know people swear by it, like religion, and it always starts wars, just like religion.
I have never, repeat never done a water change ever. I have added water to replace evaporated water using tap but my water has been checked and is pretty damn close to distilled water.
I have been doing this since I was 10. I watched my father struggle with his tanks and try his damnedest to get certain things out. Constantly...

In with the new, Out with the old.

Posted 05-20-2009 at 05:43 AM by Beaun (65 Gallon Temperate Planted Aquarium)

My brother gave me a gift certificate to DrsFosterSmith.com for my birthday, so I figured I would get some Caribbean fish with it. So I went online (LiveAquaria.com) and tryed to see if they had anything that gets brought up here with the gulf stream in the summer. They happened to have Sergeant Majors, which happend to be like $5 each. So I got two of those and 3 mexican Turbos. I tried to check out but found out that I neede to spend $30. So I looked around a little longer and found the Harlequin...

Crab Hitchhiker?

Posted 05-08-2009 at 05:21 AM by Beaun (65 Gallon Temperate Planted Aquarium)

Here is the story, this guy hitchhiked in a while ago, I think he might be responsable for the Royal Gramma loss. I was looking around in the tank the other night and noticed a crab leg on a rock, I figured it just came in with one of my water changes (natural sea water). Later that night my brother yelled for me to come over and look at the crab he found. I didn't believe him at first, but in reality there was a mud crab staring back at me. I dropped a piece of krill in there an it devoured it,...

Updated Pics, the Puffer is gone!

Posted 05-04-2009 at 09:53 AM by Beaun (65 Gallon Temperate Planted Aquarium)

Friday after work I decided it was time to let the puffer go. He was a great fish and I'm glad that I could "raise" it to maturity. After a long acclimation I let it go in the harbor that I got it from and he swam away into the deep. While I was down there I decided to pick up a few macros. I got a large red gracilaria and a laminaria (brown kelp). I'm not sure if the laminaria will survive because it dosnt live here in the summer, just the winter, so i feel that the tank temp will be...
