So back to the LFS I trekked and this time I picked out the live rock myself! I tried to find rock that looked interesting and had "stuff" growing on it. I bought about 20 more pounds and raced to get home and put it in my tank.

I was not disappointed. After doing some minor rearranging, letting the dust settle overnight so to speak, there was more to see in the coming days. I found some sea squirts, more halimeda, more tiny fan worms, and some hitch hikers! Got a couple of small hermit crabs and bristle worms weaving around in the rock.

Now I was ready to settle in and just wait for the cycle to finish. It was not until months later that I learned I had basically cycled my live rock in the best manner to preserve life. Kept lights on during the day, good water circulation, and yes I did have to deal with algae outbreaks but I got clean up crews to handle that.

Porous rock is a good call too - more surface area which helps promote good bacteria growth to keep water more stable.
