My “local tank” started as a slice of my surrounding harbors and bays, specifically East Hampton, NY on the east end of long island, complete with macro algae. The entire process is going to be an experiment.
This all started when my brother and I bought our nephew a 10 gallon tank and we put in some striped killifish and Atlantic silversides for him. I work for my local government and we do some seining and trawling roughly once and month for data collection. We would catch some interesting things and I would bring them over and put them in the tank. All of this sparked my interest in doing a full sized version. This system is now a mixed reef and this is the account of it's changes along the way.

A few changes since my last update. I now have a second chalk bass to pair up with my origional chalk bass. Chalk bass are simultaneous hermaphrodites so if you add two, you have a pair. After about a day the first bass accepted the new one and everything has been fine since. It was fairly small when I added it so I dont think it is ready to spawn yet, but I keep watching and waiting for them to start spawning rituals. Other then that I also added a bicolor blenny seeing as ever tank needs a blenny....

Nerac-v

Posted 03-22-2010 at 10:32 AM by Beaun (65 Gallon Mixed Reef (Former Temperate System))

I was able to attend NERAC-V this Saturday, it was a great conference and I was able to walk away with lots of great information and a new chiller! Thankfully my wife is very understanding as we just had our first girl (Piper) two weeks ago.

The day started with my brother and I leaving at 7:30 to arrive at Atlantis Marine World by 8:30. We walked around for a little while and I took a few shots. My favorite picture of the ~3,000g "Best Friends" tank is at the bottom. 9:30...

My wife and I got a new digital camera for each other for christmas. It is a Panasonic Lumix FZ35, it shoots in RAW so it opens the ability to really fix the white ballance after the shot is taken, a great feature for reef pictures. It comes with some nice software to work with. Here are a few of the new shots and the link to the album, some are better than others.

Been a long time...but an update.

It has been a very long time since I made an update, but here it is. I have been battleing some cyano in a few areas, but after a few large water changes and some flow changes I may be over that hump. I also am in a battle with red flatworms. I picked up a yellow wrasse (Halichoeres leucoxanthus) and it has started picking them off the rocks already. I am fine with having a few of them, but they can reach plague proportions, so the wrasse with help with that.

Back from Vacation

Posted 08-08-2009 at 01:36 PM by Beaun (65 Gallon Mixed Reef (Former Temperate System))

I was on vacation for the last week and my brother was watching the tank for me. Thankfully everything looks good and I finally have some pictures to share. Hope people like the aquascaping and the few corals that are in there. Next weekend there is a big frag swap at Atlantis Marine World (Riverhead, NY) hosted by the aquarium and the local reef club (LIRA). I will be picking up a few things while I am there. Anyways, here are the pics. Colors didn't come out great, but I dont like enhancing, so...
