My yellow tang has black dirt like specs on him, any ideas?

I've heard velvet can appear as dark specs on fish - but i think that is in the really late stages and you would really know about it if your fish had that!

Sounds like it could be black spot disease aka black ich but its not ich ..Looks like pepper sized spots on the fish
