Is there a proper way to add more salt to you tank or do you just dump it in and let it settle

You should dissolve it in water first. If you need to raise the salinity, make a concentrated solution & then slowly add it to the tank.

DO NOT just dump it in the tank.

Mix the salt in a separate plastic bucket with a heater. Get the water to the proper temp and add the salt little by little always stirring. The salt should dissolve fairly easily. Then you pour this in your main tank.

I just add it to the sump or overflow now if its a new set up with no fish or inverts I just dump it in.. I just tossed in a few cups in to the sump lastnight I use a ETSS skimmer and that will pull the salt with water out over time So I have to add.

my tank is fairly established and I dont have a sump or fuge just a skimmer and a HOB filter system

In that case I would defiantly add it with water so that it does not settle on a coral and burn it.

Yes like Jason said then in that case you better dissolve it first. It can settle out onto the corals and even fish will eat it as it falls to the bottom. Not sure that hurts them but you never know..
