I have some mexican turbo snails that will shake their shell against the glass that makes a knocking sound a couple times a day.

You will know if you have a mantis, especially if its a peacock! I have kept Peacocks for years, thye are actually a great pet. Always active, smashing, eating, interacting with people looking into their world. When your livestock, not if, but when it all starts vanishing you will be sure.

really, i don't think it is all a myth. They won't eat smaller fish and crustaceans? For this reason i have always tried to get rid of them while curing live rock.

I had one in a nano tank with a small clown fish and it never touched it. Only spearing mantis will eat fish and the chances that you get a spearing mantis in as a hitchhiker are slim. Smashing mantis will eat some of your crustaceans but they won't wipe your tank out. Mine ate alot of prepared food so it never got hungry enough to continuously attack and eat my snails and whatnot.

Next time you have one that needs killing, offer it to me (or another reefer on here) and I'll take it off you for free.
