flame scallop not doing so well...help!!

I got a flame scallop around 3 months ago and he was doing very well. All of a sudden the last few days he has been closed and I can't see any signs of life. My question is 2 fold.

1. Do scallops close up for extended periods of time?
2. If it is dead or dieing should I remove it from the tank? Will it emit any type of toxins and effect other livestock?

From my experience with them... They are not long lived ( 18 months ) Mine died after a year and he was pampered. They need a lot of Phyto and if you do an internet search, noone with any advanced knowledge or experience will recommend them to an average hobbyist. my 2 cent

I knew when I bought it that they were somewhat difficult to keep. What can I say I picked him up for 6.99 and thought I would give it a try since they are so eye catching. And maybe I would get lucky.

NP, I did the same thing...
There's alot I don't know about them. Status in the wild?? Are they tank raised or mostly wild caught?? Am I doing more harm than good, knowing that when I buy them that they're only going to last about a year, if they are young to begin with?? Where's our resident Flame Scallop expert
