If you were to wave your hand over it, does it blow around or is it sticky, meaning is it suck together like a web of algea.
if it blows around it would be BGA and sticky it's Diatoms.

If your tank is less than 5 months old I would guess its brown algea, an unfortunate stage in the maturity of your tank. You can vaccuum it out and blow it off the rocks but it will come back until the cycle is over.
I would vacuum as much off as possible and reduce your photo period, feed less food but more often to ensure no waste, make sure there is no phosphates in the water.

Unfortunatly this will not stop what is goin on but will reduce and hurry the stage though, but it will run it's course.

Jason

I'm still cycling my tank. Been through almost 3 weeks now. And its the kind that blows off easily when I give it a good swift. Thanks for your reply

Your tank will cycle through green algae, brown diatom, and cyanobacteria stages as your tank matures. There is not a lot you can do except wait it out and let your tank balance itself out as you employ good tank husbandry practices. Good water flow and not over feeding will go a long way toward a good tank.

Keep cycling!!! And, if you arent running the best protien skimmer you can afford, it will probably drag out the cycle

I retired the reef for now. Maybe a nano or a softies tank in the future when I have both time and money. 60 gallon FOWLR in the meantime. My echidna nebulosa are still going strong!
