Default calcium reactor info please

can someone break down what a calcium reactor is to me and how nessisary it is and what is the average price to instal 1 and maintain it what is so great about one.

it's easy for me to say because I got my reactor just for setting a tank up for a friend but I would never run a tank without one again.
