Brain Coral Problem-ASAP-3reef Forums

Hey everyone-
We added salt water from the ocean to the tank last night only about 20 oz to a 90 gallon and our Brain Coral has overnight developed a spot that is slimy and looks like it is dissolving the tissue. What should we do? Everyone else seems fine. If anyone has any suggestions we would greatly appreciate it. You have helped us in the past. As soon as I get a camera that takes decent pics I will post a few more.

Did you check the salinity? Just wondering..

Unfortunately using fresh ocean water carries risks. Although it is convenient, The risk of bringing un-wanted parasites organisms etc. Are there. The water should be tested prior to adding to your DT. This still doesn't help with the un-seen. I don't recommend using it.

I agree, unless you are starting a tank with all ocean water...I would not add sea water to an established tank....How are your other corals?

Salinity is good, everyone else is good. I just found out that the spot was there prior to adding the water--it has grown since last night though. Should we be concerned or do anything or just wait and see??

This morning a few of the other Corals are looking bad. What can we try to take care of parasites etc.

Please help!!!!

What do you mean by looking bad...can you explain further?
The white area on your brain could be the result of improper lighting, tissue necrosis, black band disease, or similar that is attributed to harmful cyanobacteria!
Sometimes antibiotics are required to potentially treat these conditions, while other times, it can be as easy as dipping the coral in an iodine solution!

There is white slime on the tissue of the Brain which seems to be dissolving it. You can see the hard skeleton under it. It is spreading rapidly. It looks like mucus but it is where it is dissolving. The only other one that looks strange is another brain that has its mouth wide open but it is new to our tank this week so were not sure if that is water related. How do you do the iodine dip???

Any suggestions??

Try 40 drops of Lugol's in a gallon of saltwater and place the coral in their for roughly 7 minutes, then remove and place the coral back in your tank. Do not add the dip water into your tank once the process is complete however!!!
