| Bad case of ich... I talked to somethingfishy today regarding the outbreak I found in my 90gal.
Could this be a problem I had a few months ago still lingering or is each outbreak different each time? I have treated with everything on the shelves before.
My salinity was at 1.026 (water evaporated) before I just changed out 5gal. tank water with water at 0.000. Did a recheck on it and it came down .002. Is this the right speed for bringing the salinity down or should it go faster or slower? Any other ideas?
I have always used garlic to soak their food in.
I don't get it. <<<POSTED YESTERDAY IN THE WRONG PLACE!!!
TODAY 10/07/04
Woke up this morning to find all of my fish just COVERED with ich. I don't think I have time for the hypo-salinity treatment. What is one to do???? I have a puffer and LR so I don't think copper is such a great idea. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

| Re: Bad case of ich... Saltyfish, I hope everything turns out alright for you. Dont do all of your talking on the phone. I'm still all ears on this subject although I've read everything. I think my tang still has a little ich, that is if it even is ich.

| Re: Bad case of ich... Craig was the one I got the links from. From what I've read, about the only thing to do is QT all fish for 6 wk. I know its a pain in the butt and I really dread having to do it. *Many start with a fresh water dip for 5-10 minutes and then do the hypsalinity thing with a little higher temp. And then there is the copper and a couple of other treatments. They say you should not use cooper on Tangs that it causes an intestinal problem that can lead to a bacterial infection. Keeping in QT for 6 weeks is the main key as well as letting your tank sit for 6 weeks with no fish. The parasite can not survive without fish but can linger around *in the LS,LR, and water, so also give the tank 6 weeks.
So far I've been lucky. As far as I know I only have the Regal Tang with ich, or I guess I should say that it is the only one showing any symptoms. I think the food soaked in garlic has helped but even when it seems as though the spots are gone, if you look really close you can see where they have been, or I guess actually they are still there but under the skin. Since my tang is doing so well as far as eating and behavior and the other fish haven't shown signs of being affected, I haven't done anything. I may in a few weeks when I have to move my tank. If I'm going to QT *that would be the best time. If it is ich the QT is the only way you can rid the fish-all of the fish- and the tank of ich, otherwise it will always be there and the fish will have the potential for it to *"come back."
Good luck and keep us informed, and I'll do the same.

| Re: Bad case of ich... It seems as though my tank was quickly on it's way to being over-stocked. Craig had suggested a big QT due to the size of my fish and to copper it. So, to save a little money (about $650.00) I ditched my baby girl, my dog-face puffer. [smiley=cry2.gif] (Due to the fact she is pretty big and can't tolerate certain situations.)
I re-read the many links that were provided. (tyvm) After much debate and a talk with Craig I decided to go the hypo-salinity route. (I will reimberse you for the call Craig!) [smiley=lol.gif]
So, my conclusion, I need all the prayer I can get! [smiley=angel.gif] |

| Re: Bad case of ich... You've definately have my prayers. I've been saying quite a few for myself.. *If you happen to have the chance I would love to see some pics of your fish covered with ich. I have 20 fish but it is only the Regal Tang that seems to have spots and very minimal at that and tiny. That's why I keep wondering if I really do have ich. Wouldn't some of the others have it as well, my yellow tang and fox face?
Let me know how the hyposalinity works for you . Will you also be using cooper or some chemical of some sort?
What are you going to QT yours in. I have a little 10 gal, a 5 gl tank and a couple of 30 gl tubs that I will use if I quaranteen. *Other than that I'm not sure how to set them up other than no rock or sand. need a heater but don't know what to do about filtration on the tubs.
Let me hear what you are doing. ANd good luck I'll be thinking about you. I know you must be frustrated , nervous and upset. I know I am.

| Re: Bad case of ich... good luck! I face the same dilemma and i have come to terms that the only way to get the ich out is to QT the fish and starve the tank (in the same time the fishes are in the QT the tank is kept fishless).
_________
I retired the reef for now. Maybe a nano or a softies tank in the future when I have both time and money. 60 gallon FOWLR in the meantime. My echidna nebulosa are still going strong! |
