Default Need suggestions for this algae prob.

Whats up 3reefers? I have a quick question. My friend has some type of algae surface film. Most of the layer is a greenfilm, and some parts have bubbles of algae growin on the top. So far we tried scoopin it out (impossible), did a water change, added new carbon. What the flip is goin wrong? Does anyone have any suggestions?

As Tangster asked, How old is the tank?
How old are the lights? What kelvin are the lights?
I would be willing to bet that your friend has a high amount of nutrients in the tank. My guess is that because of this your friend also has a lower than optimal pH as well. Check alkalinity as well as those brought up by tangster! An excess amount of nitrates will cause an algae bloom as well as increased phosphates from foods(overfeeding?), some liquid vitamins and foods, insufficient filtration (biological, mechanical and chemical).

Can't add much to that. Once you have chemistry questions answered you can deal with the other stuff ie. bubble algae with some critters.

thnx for the replies, i guess all he really needed to do was clean out the filter sponge that he had in the back. I told him to be sure to clean it often because the sponges, themselves, are nitrate "factories". Thanks for the comments
