Cyano in the sump!

I thought I had cyano under control. Looking at my refung in my sump it is coated!!! Everything their is covered even the macro. Should I scrape the sides and rinse the macro or just let it take its course?

It is pretty common to have some cyno in a sump. I constantly have a small amount in my sump, especially floating in the macro and on the bottom in a low flow area. I'm not big on cyno removers as it doesn't treat the cause. They can be useful for a quick shock treatment, but the cyno tends to come back as you have not removed the nutrients that grew it in the first place.

Your best long term bet is to physically remove as much as possible and find out why it is growing. (Check feeding levels, phosphates, lighting and flow) I put a filter pad before the return and then stir up the sump as much as I can to get the cyno into the floss. I then immediately remove the floss and clean off the cyno. I'll repeat this process every couple days till the cyno goes away. Anyway, better in the sump than in the show tank. It is a whole lot easier to treat and gives me a good idea of overall water qualilty.

Read the article he lists, It is what helped me with my very very bad problem. It is long but very worth it. You can look at my gallery and see my old cyno problem, it is almost all gone now sense i moved some powerheads around and got an improved skimmer.
