Update.
Thanks for the great advice. After lots of adjustments, I upgraded the pump to a mag 9, and put on a gated valve for fine adjustments to the input water flow (the manual suggested a ball valve - but definately the gated valve gives way more control).
There was a very significant increase of production. The input valve now allows a finer control from a very dry skimmate to a high volume of wet skimmate.

The tradeoff is a bigger pump to a much better controlled skimmer with higher production but associated noise and water heating - but I have no regrets in the skimmer or the use of the bigger pump.
