Default Quarantine tank

I have been reading about setting up a quarantine tank and have heard that it is a good idea to lower the salinity to around 1.010-1.013 so as to kill off any parasites while the fish is in it. I was wondering what people thought of this, is this standard practice or could it just add more stress to the fish?
